small object

I had another post knocking around in my head this morning but as I walked into the office I saw a wee envelope sitting on the desk. It was my fabric from the Small Object, I had totally forgotten about it in my sleep-deprived state. Sara ran a contest to win a fat of her fabric right before I had the baby, I put a comment in and won, I was shocked. I really am one of those people that never win at these sorts of things. She emailed me on a particularly crappy day to tell me I had won and it made everything so much better. Yesterday was again crappy so to see that envelope, well I almost cried.

The packaging is awesome of course, It came in a popcorn bag, geniuses!

Well I am not sure what I will make yet but I guarantee it will start as something to wear for little dude and end up in his quilt made from his baby clothes.

Unfortunately The Small Object will not be at Indy Craft in the ATL this year but if you are in SC you can see her here. I went to Indy a few year's ago in the rain and picked up a print for LD's room, which I still love, I also sent a matching one to his aunt in LA for her to remember LD by.

Today the sun is shining and I am going to divide some plants and weed, hope you have a good one.

beer ice cream

Could I please be more of a downer, geez!

We spent Memorial Day watching the Deadliest Catch marathon on Discovery, and then I spent the next two nights dreaming about grinding as a deck hand on the Cornelia Marie. While I got seasick from watching the boats on the Bering Sea bob around there was ice cream to be made, the husband made up some beer ice cream. Yes that is a beer ice cream sandwich in the shape of a butterfly, and now you have seen everything. Not sure were he got the recipe but rest assured it tastes like beer without the alcohol flavor, we used a chocolate stout and I think it turned out nicely. The cookies were from marthastewart.com and I must say the dough is a bit on the soft side and must be kept cold to work with.

Yes the cookie is broken, my fault, I should have greased the pan or cooked it on the parchment I had ran out of. In staying with the “keeping it real” theme I was not about to waist a perfectly good cookie or make another sandwich for the photo. I had the greenhorns to get back too, will they ever learn to just shut up and fish already.

I have been feeling better and the mastitis seems to be under control though we have to wait till the antibiotics are done and see if it holds. We have gotten ourselves a lovely case of thrush which kind of sucks, but I swore no complaining today so moving on.

Summer is about to begin which means two kids at home 24/7. This could be an interesting seven weeks, I am not sure what I will do with all that bonding time but I sure as hell better figure it out soon huh. Maybe I will just keep feeding him beer ice cream.

harder

Things have gotten a bit harder around here the mastitis is back. I guess it never went away but here I am again fighting this infection, it makes everything harder to manage. I hurt all over, from head to toe, and it just keeps coming. In the night when I wake to feed my baby I am usually happy to do it, I love rocking him in my chair while I touch his wee feet as he eats his nightly meals. Now I can barley get out of bed from the fatigue, when I blink while changing his diaper I almost fall asleep. Soon the depression will come back and I will be in that hole again, I long for making ice cream with my dudes and watching the flowers grow in the garden. I have to come up with the energy to wage major war against this infection so I am off to unplug for the long weekend, we are headed to the lake house, no phone, no tv, no internet I am looking forward to it.

friday night cream

I finally had the opportunity to break out my mother’s day gift today. While I was not the inaugural user, Big D made me lemon ice cream the other day; I was the first taster though. There was this post at Prickly Pear Bloom that made me get off my butt then there was her link to this that really made me want to get back in the kitchen.

Strawberry's are in season around here so strawberry ice cream it is, and just in time the FOOD mag was in my mailbox with none other that ice cream recipe's. I don't like chunks of fruit in my cream so I puréed macerated berries and added them to the custard mix. Then set the machine to whirl my cream into a sweet frozen treat.

I am looking for a rosemary ice cream recipe now, I had it in a restaurant years ago and have never forgotten how great it was. Incidentally the chef from that place was on Top Chef a few years ago and came in second place.

* Yes that is a dirty stove top! That is just how I like to roll - you know, all real life like.
